Finding Calm Through Creativity: Meet Michael
Every Tuesday afternoon, Michael Dilger picks up his markers and leaves his worries at the door.
As a part of the IDSS Tuesday Art Group in Bundaberg, Michael has rediscovered his love for art, and found a creative way to support his mental wellbeing through art. It's become a weekly ritual. A time to slow down, focus on shapes and patterns, and find a sense of calm.
“I rediscovered my passion for art after many years of not feeling creative,” Michael says. “Art on Tuesdays has inspired me — I love shapes and patterns and I especially love the work of Van Gogh.”
He found his niche through Zentangle marker art, or what he likes to call Zen Doodle. Over time, his creativity has grown into detailed designs that reflect his own unique style.
“My art is an outlet for me — it’s relaxing and a great way to express myself. Art is the highlight of my week. It helps ground me and is a distraction from my anxiety and overthinking my day to day life.”
Michael's Favourite Piece: City of Colour

Michael's favourite piece for this year’s exhibition is City of Colour, inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, but reimagined with Michael’s love for pattern, shape and vivid colour.
“I love the shapes and colours I’ve created with the inspiration of Starry Nights.”
Through the Tuesday Art Group, Michael has found not just a creative outlet, but a place to belong. A place to share stories, ideas, and a few laughs, and a place to remind himself that art can always bring a little ray of sunshine.
